New vs. used Ford Ranger: Top 5 differences

There's a new Ranger on the Horizon and it promises to be very impressive, with a whole host of new features. Should you buy a pre-loved one now, or hang on for a while until the nifty new model arrives? Here's what you get with the 2019 used Ford Ranger...

1. A brand new engine in selected models
The Ford Struandale Engine Plant has produced the 2019-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine powering the new Ford Ranger Raptor, as well as selected Rangers and Everests, launched locally in the first half of 2019.

Output figures are impressive: 157 kW with an impressive 500 Nm of torque, and Ford promises that it's going to be more efficient too. Yep, you may want to wait for this kind of performance but bear in mind that this new engine will probably only be available on the high-spec models, such as the XLT and Wildtrak. Rumour has it that there will be a few other versions of the same engine available too.

2. A new 10-speed gearbox
A super-duper new engine deserves a smooth-shifting new transmission, doesn't it? While the new 10-speed torque converter auto-gearbox sounds a little excessive on a bakkie, it's a great fit for fuel economy.

3. New safety features
New tech and safety equipment also debuted in the 2019 Ranger, at Group 1 Cars. Upmarket safety features such as have Pre-Collision Assist with Inter-Urban Autonomous Emergency Braking (which include vehicle and pedestrian detection) might just be on offer in selected models, as well as Active Park Assist to help you ace that pesky parallel parking every time.

4. A more stylish, cushy interior, packed with tech
Australian motoring media were highly impressed with the plush, modern interior, and the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration. And that will not be all...

5. Improved steering and suspension
Suspension changes have been made across the entire range of 2019 Rangers, which will help to improve the overall ride quality and to lessen body roll, as well as improve the drive and handling when towing that trailer or boat. Word on the street is that the revised steering feels lighter at low speeds than before, which helps to make parking a cinch.
